Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will meet Melaka executive councillor Muhamad Akmal Saleh this afternoon amid speculation about the latter’s party future.
Zahid, also deputy prime minister, said he has received no personal update on Akmal’s decision.
“He will meet me this afternoon. I do not know what his decision is,” he told reporters after officiating the closing of the Multaqa Ilmuwan Islam Malaysia here today.
The Rural and Regional Development Minister offered no further details on the meeting.
Background to Tensions
Merlimau assemblyman Akmal, Umno Youth chief, earlier hinted at resigning from his roles due to internal friction.
Yesterday, he said he would abide by decisions from Zahid and Melaka Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh on his positions.
He credited both leaders for selecting him to contest his state seat and appointing him Rural Development, Agriculture, and Food Security Committee chairman.
Roots of Speculation
Media reports noted Akmal’s suggestion for Umno to leave the unity government, which drew a negative response from Zahid.
This prompted hints that Akmal might step down from his two current positions.
