Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed hope that former prime minister Najib Razak will receive a pardon from the King. He stressed that the decision lies entirely with the King and should not be questioned.
Zahid said he and others find it hard to see the former Umno president remain imprisoned after three years. He made these remarks during his speech at the 17th annual general meeting of Makkal Sakti in Butterworth.
Royal Prerogative on Pardons
The power to grant a pardon belongs solely to the King, Zahid emphasised. He expressed confidence that the King would act justly and with sympathy towards those who have served their sentence.
Zahid described the sentence as not only punitive but also correctional. He argued that Najib, as a leader, deserves proper consideration for a full pardon.
Respect for King’s Decision
While praying and hoping for a positive outcome, Zahid urged against pressuring the King. He noted that the King knows the right timing and course of action.
As Najib’s true friend, Zahid pledged to stand by him and continue fighting for him. He said there is no need to publicise his efforts, which he has shared privately with Makkal Sakti president R.S. Thanenthiran.
Ongoing Support
Zahid vowed to support Najib until the end of his life. He earnestly hoped and prayed for Najib’s pardon.
Najib is serving a six-year sentence in Kajang Prison for misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd. The Kuala Lumpur High Court will decide tomorrow on his application to serve the remainder under house arrest.
