An Umno leader has revealed that the party imposed two strict conditions before allowing Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh to organise last Saturday’s convention.
One was to avoid any discussion on withdrawing from the unity government. The other prohibited criticism of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Conditions for Approval
The anonymous leader told FMT that Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi only approved the event based on these assurances. Issues raised by Akmal, such as leaving the government or realigning with PAS, were never discussed with Zahid.
The president does not endorse or approve such ideas.
Zahid has not issued any directive for the Youth wing to deliberate on exiting the government, the source added. During the convention’s opening, Akmal claimed Zahid had fully supported the assembly. He quoted Zahid as saying he would back grassroots demands to leave the coalition.
Akmal’s Defence
Akmal made these remarks to counter claims that he lacked Zahid’s blessing for the event. He insisted Zahid was the first to agree and was ready to fight if members wanted to pull out. However, party insiders maintain this does not reflect Zahid’s actual position.
Another Umno insider, speaking anonymously, said Zahid has never signalled readiness to quit the unity government. While he permitted the convention, this should not be interpreted as endorsing its resolutions. Key decisions like leaving the government rest solely with the Supreme Council.
Party Priorities
Umno currently has no intention of becoming an opposition party, the insider emphasised. The focus remains on serving the people. Zahid has not supported any suggestions for the party to exit the coalition.
Barisan Nasional secretary-general Zambry Kadir stated yesterday that proposals from the Umno Youth convention must go to Umno’s Supreme Council for decision. This includes matters regarding the party’s role in the unity government.
