Former Law Minister Mohd Zaid Ibrahim has launched a scathing attack on Umno leadership, calling them “pussycats” and urging them to stop using the party’s annual general meeting (AGM) to pass hollow resolutions regarding a pardon for Najib Razak.
In a Facebook post, Zaid questioned why Umno leaders, who take pride in holding seven cabinet posts and the Deputy Prime Ministership, are unable to confront Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim directly to demand a full pardon for the former premier.
“You have no guts to confront Anwar, and you all probably are happy to have Najib incarcerated for life,” he said.
“Tell the members the truth. That Anwar and Zahid prefer that Najib not get his pardon,” he added.
Zaid also directed his criticism at the party’s rank-and-file, asking if they realized they were being “used” in a staged “drama” of passing resolutions and reciting poems.
He asked if members felt ashamed of being “Zahid’s choir boys and girls” in exchange for free transportation and hotel stays in Kuala Lumpur.
“Stop wasting time. Najib is not getting out for as long as Anwar is PM,” Zaid asserted.
He advised the party to move on to more essential deliberations to regain public respect for the Malay-based party.
His remarks come as 104 out of 191 Umno divisions submitted motions for Najib’s full pardon to be debated at the upcoming 2025 Umno General Assembly next week.
