Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Abang Openg said the time would come for him to step down, describing his eventual departure as a ‘natural process’.
Abang Johari said his age and health would be the main considerations, stressing the importance of preparing the next generation of experienced leaders to ensure continuity in Sarawak’s development.
Preparing the next generation
‘I have mentioned this (stepping down after 2030) in Miri,’ he said after launching the Sarawakku Sayang Mukah programme.
‘That is a normal process because we will eventually step down when the time comes, as we grow older.’
Abang Johari said leading a state required a team, with every member responsible for preparing well-trained successors.
‘Douglas Uggah and I were trained for a long time before leading the Sarawak government.
‘There must be a collective effort as a team to ensure the state’s development, so we must train the next generation and build that team,’ he said.
Age and health key considerations
Asked whether he would consider staying beyond 2030 following calls for him to remain, Abang Johari said his age and health would have to be taken into account.
At a programme in Miri on Sept 13, Abang Johari had hinted that the next state election could be his last, as he will turn 80 in 2030.
