Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari has moved to calm speculation, saying his mention of PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar as a possible successor is merely a suggestion and still subject to the consent of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
All current Exco members remain eligible
Speaking to reporters after launching the Selangor Creative Economy Action Plan 2025-2035 on Monday, Amirudin stressed that nothing has been decided and all existing state executive councillors are still in the running.
“This is only my suggestion. If it is accepted, Alhamdulillah. If not, we will look for another alternative. No problem,” he said.
He named Mohd Najwan Halimi, Dr Mohamad Fahmi Ngah, Borhan Aman Shah and Izham Hashim as among those who remain eligible.
Amirudin also pointed out that the proposal is meant for the next term, adding that some media headlines had triggered unnecessary early debate.
“Actually, this is for the next term, but many people just saw the headline and jumped to conclusions. I don’t understand it either,” he said.
Focus first on winning the election
He reminded everyone that careful planning is needed for any leadership transition and that the immediate priority is to secure victory in the coming Selangor state election.
“The future requires planning if changes are to be made. However, the condition is to first win the election,” Amirudin said.
He acknowledged he is approaching the end of two terms himself and respects the unwritten convention, while noting new opportunities may arise for individuals at other levels.
Amirudin first floated Nurul Izzah’s name during a recent appearance on the “Keluar Sekejap” podcast hosted by Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Sufian Hamdan. He told the hosts that the idea had already been discussed with her and the final decision rests with Nurul Izzah.
