Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today condemned the recent attack on former economy minister Rafizi Ramli’s 12-year-old son, stating that an “evil” and “extremist” culture had taken root in Malaysia.
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar announced that he had instructed Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail to ensure immediate and transparent action is taken to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
“We must not only take action (over this case), we must put an end to this evil culture,” Anwar said.
The incident occurred yesterday at approximately 2 p.m. at a shopping mall in Putrajaya. Police reports indicate that an assailant dragged the boy and stabbed him with a syringe in the mall’s drop-off area. At the time, the boy was with his mother and their driver.
According to Rafizi, two men on a motorcycle, dressed in black with helmets, had been following his wife’s car prior to the assault. The former PKR deputy president expressed his belief that the attack was a warning intended to silence him for being outspoken on certain issues.
