Village chiefs will oversee the menteri besar’s service centres in Perlis’s three vacated constituencies of Guar Sanji, Bintong, and Simpang Empat.
Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah said PAS had requested coordinators for these areas, once held by the party’s assemblymen before their memberships ended.
PAS nominees turned down
PAS nominated former menteri besar Shukri Ramli for Guar Sanji, Santan assemblyman Azmir Azizan for Chuping, and Kayang assemblyman Asrul Aimran Abd Jalil for Bintong.
However, Abu Bakar, from Bersatu, noted that a state exco meeting chose village chiefs instead.
This step aims to avoid disputes and preserve political stability.
Temporary measure amid court case
“The appointment of village chiefs is temporary,” he said.
“Each area will be handled by the menteri besar’s political secretary until courts rule on the seats’ status.”
Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong), and Saad Seman (Chuping) sought judicial review against Perlis assembly speaker Rus’sele Eizan at the Kangar High Court.
Their seats were declared vacant after PAS ended their memberships.
PAS acted over claims they withdrew support from Shukri, the menteri besar at the time.
Seats stay vacant for now
Rus’sele sent vacancy notices for the three seats to the Election Commission on Dec 29.
The EC ruled out by-elections after the assembly withdrew the notices on Dec 31.
Rus’sele indicated the seats will remain vacant until the 16th general election.
This follows PAS assurances to uphold state government stability.
