Former four-term Kota assemblyman Awaludin Said has been appointed as the new Negeri Sembilan state assembly speaker, returning to a post he previously held from 2013 to 2018.
The Umno leader was the sole candidate proposed for the position and took his oath of office before the state assembly secretary, Amin Ludin, this morning, Bernama reported.
Awaludin, 66, served as the Kota assemblyman from 2004 to 2023 and did not seek a fifth term. He remains the Rembau Umno deputy chief.
Kamarol appointed deputy speaker
Two-term Paroi assemblyman Kamarol Ridzuan Zain of PAS was later appointed deputy speaker.
Kamarol and the other 34 assemblymen were formally sworn in at the 36-member state assembly today.
Rantau assemblyman Mohamad Hasan, who is also the Rembau MP and foreign minister, was absent as he was away on official business.
BN-PN pact holds two-thirds majority
Barisan Nasional holds 18 seats in the state assembly, while Perikatan Nasional has seven.
Their pact therefore commands a two-thirds majority in the 36-member legislature.
Pakatan Harapan holds the remaining 11 seats.
