Bersatu is expected to contest eight of the 28 seats in the Melaka state election, including four where it could face Pakatan Harapan (PH), amid speculation of possible cooperation between the two sides.
A Bersatu source told FMT that the eight seats are Kelebang, Lendu, Gadek, Sungai Udang, Pantai Kundor, Pengkalan Batu, Ayer Keroh and Bemban.
Deputy Melaka Bersatu chief Mohamad Ali Mohamad is expected to contest Kelebang following pressure from the party grassroots, the source said.
Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin is scheduled to announce the party’s candidates tomorrow night.
Four potential clashes with PH
The speculation over Bersatu’s seat allocation comes amid talk of possible cooperation between the party and PH.
On Saturday, PH announced its candidates for 21 seats. If the line-up remains unchanged until nomination day, Bersatu will face PH in Kelebang, Gadek, Pengkalan Batu and Ayer Keroh.
However, the source described the prospect of the two sides contesting against each other as a “friendly clash”.
Contacted by FMT, Mohamad declined to comment on speculation that he would contest Kelebang.
“We’ll wait for the announcement of the candidates,” he said.
Mohamad Ali’s previous election bid
Mohamad contested Sungai Udang under the Barisan Nasional ticket in the 2021 state election but lost.
He joined Bersatu in April 2024 after leaving Umno.
