A Surprising Suspension
Wan Ahmad, addressing the House, admitted he was uncertain about the rationale for his suspension. “Honestly, I’m not sure myself why I was suspended. You can ask Pagoh if he comes in again,” he said, maintaining his commitment to Perikatan Nasional (PN), Kelantan, and his constituents. His remarks followed an interjection by PH-Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, who expressed dismay over the disciplinary action against the articulate Machang MP.
Rayer, visibly sympathetic, described the suspension as perplexing and unjust. “I’m genuinely saddened. Why would such a coherent and eloquent MP face suspension from his own party? It feels like double standards,” he said, drawing chuckles from the floor. In a light-hearted gesture, Rayer invited Wan Ahmad to “sit on this side” of the House if developments worsened, adding, “I disagree with the injustice against you.” Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul reminded Wan Ahmad that responding to Rayer was his prerogative.
Disciplinary Action and Party Tensions
The suspension of Wan Ahmad and the sacking of Bukit Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan have stirred controversy within Bersatu. Both MPs questioned the fairness of the disciplinary process, alleging bias and conflicts of interest within the party’s disciplinary board. Wan Ahmad’s membership was suspended for one term, while Wan Saiful was expelled for breaching the party’s code of conduct.
The disciplinary measures follow speculation that the duo was linked to a movement collecting statutory declarations to challenge Muhyiddin’s leadership as Bersatu president. Both MPs have vowed to appeal the decisions within the 14-day window provided.
