Parti Bangsa Malaysia president Larry Sng believes an alliance between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) could secure a simple majority in the 16th General Election (GE16) if the two coalitions continue their cooperation at the national level.
He said such an outcome could reduce the role of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) as kingmakers, particularly if the next general election results in a closely contested Parliament.
In a Facebook post, Larry said the current political trend suggested the BN-PN partnership could also sweep most state elections in Peninsular Malaysia, with Penang being the exception.
Only 14 more seats needed, says Larry
Larry noted that BN and PN won a combined 98 parliamentary seats in the 2022 General Election.
“The total combined seats won by BN and PN in the 2022 general election is 98. The magic number to form the government is 112. Only 14 additional parliamentary seats are needed.
“Discounting the political alignment of East Malaysian parties from Sabah and Sarawak, I believe that based on the current trajectory, it is highly likely that BN-PN will easily form the simple majority post-GE16,” he said.
GE15 ended with a hung Parliament
During the 2022 General Election, BN, PN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) contested against one another in 171 parliamentary constituencies, the majority of them in Peninsular Malaysia, including 86 seats with at least a 65% Malay electorate.
The election resulted in a hung Parliament, with PH emerging as the largest bloc after winning 82 of the 222 Dewan Rakyat seats. PN secured 74 seats, followed by BN with 30 seats, GPS with 23 seats and GRS with six seats.
Following the election, BN, GPS and GRS backed PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim to form the current Madani government.
Political observers have previously predicted that GE16 could produce another hung Parliament, with no single party or coalition expected to win enough seats to form the federal government on its own.
