The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has officially approved the implementation of a new 15-point (best-of-three) scoring system effective January 2027, sparking mixed reactions among the world’s top shuttlers.
While some players welcomed the change, which replaces the long-standing 21-point format, others remain cautious about how it will alter the dynamics of the sport.
Olympic champion and women’s singles world number one An Se Young (South Korea) admitted to being caught off guard by the announcement made at the BWF Annual General Meeting.
“This change is quite shocking, but I must adapt better and push through,” she told Bernama.
Indonesian rising star and 2025 World Junior silver medalist Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah predicted the format would demand higher mental readiness.
Having played the format at the junior level, he noted that matches feel “rushed” and players must be alert from the very first point, leaving no room to slowly find their rhythm as they do in the 21-point format.
Indonesian doubles specialist Fajar Alfian viewed the shift positively, though his compatriot Nikolaus Joaquin expressed doubt, fearing matches might end too quickly.
Meanwhile, Japan’s world number seven pair Kie Nakanishi and Rin Iwanaga look forward to the change, believing it suits their fast-paced playing style.
The decision was finalized during the 87th BWF AGM in Horsens, where the proposal received the required two-thirds majority vote. The 3×15 system will take effect on January 4, 2027.
BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul stated that the new system aims to make badminton more engaging, ensure consistent match durations, and improve player welfare and recovery.
