China said it is ready to “fight to the end” in a trade war with the United States after President Donald Trump threatened an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods.
An unnamed commerce ministry spokesperson said Beijing’s stance on tariff and trade wars is consistent: if Washington wants to fight, China will fight; if it wants to negotiate, the door is open.
The spokesperson defended sweeping export controls on rare earths as lawful measures to strengthen China’s export control system and safeguard national and collective security.
Trump’s Friday announcement, along with planned US export controls on “any and all critical software” from Nov 1, rattled markets and cast doubt on a potential meeting with President Xi Jinping in South Korea, stoking fears of an escalation in the trade war.
