DAP is prepared to take on additional ministries if Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim decides on another Cabinet reshuffle.
Party chairman Gobind Singh Deo, however, refrained from elaborating, stressing that the decision rests entirely with Anwar.
Prime Minister’s Prerogative
“That’s under his authority, so it’s up to him to decide. If there is a Cabinet reshuffle, let’s leave it to him to announce,” Gobind said after opening the Federal Territories DAP convention today.
“We are always prepared. It’s up to the prime minister’s wisdom. He will make the final decision on who is best to lead each portfolio.”
Gobind serves as digital minister, a role he assumed in December 2023.
The party also holds four other Cabinet positions: secretary-general Loke Siew Fook in transport, Nga Kor Ming in housing and local government, Hannah Yeoh in youth and sports, and Steven Sim in human resources.
Vacancies Prompt Speculation
A Cabinet shake-up appears likely after Upko president Ewon Benedick resigned as entrepreneur development and cooperatives minister, and with investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz’s senate term ending next month.
Two posts remain vacant following the May resignations of economy minister Rafizi Ramli and natural resources and environment sustainability minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
Their responsibilities are currently managed by finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan and plantation and commodities minister Johari Ghani, respectively.
Anwar has stayed silent on reshuffle rumours.
Readiness for National Polls
Separately, Gobind affirmed DAP’s preparedness for a possible early 16th general election, citing ongoing groundwork and governmental efforts.
He added that the upcoming 17th Sabah state election will indicate public support for the unity government.
