DAP has hit back at PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang over his claim that DAP is leading Pakatan Harapan (PH) in “continuing the work of colonisers to destroy Malay-Muslims”.
DAP central executive committee member Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali described the remarks as dangerous politics and accused Hadi of equating PAS with Islam.
The senator said DAP respected the Federal Constitution, which clearly establishes Islam as the religion of the federation.
“If DAP opposes Islam, DAP would have been banned by now for opposing what is outlined in the Federal Constitution,” he said in a Facebook post.
Sheikh Umar questions Hadi’s political stance
Sheikh Umar also criticised what he described as Hadi’s repeated changes in political stance, citing the PAS president’s previous opposition to Umno.
“In 1981, he declared Umno as ‘kafir’ (infidels), sowing division among (Malay-Muslims). But on July 27, in wanting to embrace Umno, he said the differences between PAS and Umno were merely secondary matters,” he said.
Hadi had accused DAP in a Facebook post this morning of being at the helm of PH and seeking to eradicate Malay-Muslims.
The Marang MP cited DAP’s push for the revival of local council elections and its “Malaysian Malaysia” vision for the country, describing the latter as “extreme secularism”.
Hadi also accused DAP of opposing PAS’ agenda for an Islamic state and the implementation of shariah law in PAS-led states when the two parties were previously allies.
Kerk urges politics based on common ground
Separately, Melaka DAP leader Kerk Chee Yee urged Hadi to learn from history rather than use it as a weapon to divide Malaysians of different races.
He said Malaysians might have different religions, ethnicities and political beliefs, but shared the same country.
“Mature politics is defined by searching for common ground, not constantly looking for enemies,” said the Ayer Keroh assemblyman.
“We may have differing opinions, but don’t build Malaysia’s future by sowing hatred,” he said.
