Former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has launched a scathing critique of the current government’s so‑called “reforms,” questioning issues surrounding the judiciary, human rights, and freedom of speech, and mocking the administration’s approach as mere lip service.
He highlighted a critical vacuum in the judiciary, pointing out that Malaysia currently has no Chief Justice and 30 unfilled judgeships, calling the situation unprecedented.
“The country has no Chief Justice, and thirty judgeships are vacant. What has happened? This has never happened before,” he wrote on social media.
Mahathir also touched on the leaked documents controversy, questioning why action was taken against those who leaked the documents if they were indeed false.
“They say there was a leak, and that what leaked was not true. If it wasn’t true, why act against the leaker? Maybe it was true? Accusations of interference and more. Look at your own hands—are they clean?” he quipped.
He further criticized the silencing of discussions on key issues such as judicial appointments, addendum documents, and shares in entities like MAHB.
“Hey! Don’t talk about judicial appointments, don’t talk about addendums, don’t talk about MAHB shares, don’t talk about 3R issues. Tape your mouth, put a hook in your nose, and be dragged along. This is part of reform,” he said sarcastically.
Mahathir also lambasted asset seizures and detentions without charges being framed as reform.
“It’s not only that the law is ignored—you can’t even speak. Even in Parliament, you could be suspended. Wow! Reform is truly ‘great.’ Shout reform all you want!”
