The Home Ministry has been directed to strengthen security protocols following an incident in which a woman attempted to approach and hug Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak during the state-level National Day parade on Sunday, August 31.
Communications Minister and unity government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil announced that the issue was discussed during the weekly post-Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, September 3.
“The Home Ministry has been instructed to review all safety measures, particularly those concerning state rulers, to prevent any undesirable incidents,” Fahmi said at a press conference.
The incident occurred at 8:20 a.m. when a 41-year-old local woman rushed toward the Sultan on the grandstand during the Perak state anthem. Security personnel promptly intervened, stopping her and escorting her from the scene.
Perak Police Chief Commissioner Noor Hisam Noordin revealed that the woman has a history of drug-related offenses and is under psychiatric supervision.
In response, Inspector-General of Police Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail announced plans to enhance security for state royalty and leaders nationwide. These measures will include specialized bodyguard training, incorporating techniques from the Unit Tindak Khas and commandos, to standardize protocols for officers assigned to palaces and state governments.
