The Sessions Court here today acquitted blogger Wan Azri Wan Deris, widely known as Papagomo, of a sedition charge related to a statement made against the government. Judge Siti Aminah Ghazali ruled that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against the 42-year-old at the conclusion of its case.
Wan Azri was charged in January 2024 under the Sedition Act 1948 for allegedly claiming in a Facebook video posted on November 8, 2023, that the government was “pro-Israel and pro-Western nations.”
The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mustaffa P. Kunyalam, while Wan Azri was represented by lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali. During the trial, the prosecution called nine witnesses to testify.
