Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Faishal Ibrahim has resigned from political office after admitting to a “lapse of judgment” in the way he handled his interactions with a woman who is a member of the public.
In a resignation letter dated July 20 to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Faishal said there was no physical relationship between him and the woman, and he had not intended for their interactions to develop into one.
However, he acknowledged that, upon reflection, his conduct did not meet the standards expected of him or the responsibilities entrusted to him.
“There was a lapse of judgment on my part in the way I handled the interactions, and in failing to establish clearer boundaries at an earlier stage,” he said.
Steps down from multiple positions
Faishal also resigned as a Member of Parliament for Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC and relinquished his membership in the People’s Action Party (PAP).
He said he had decided to leave politics so that he could devote his time and attention to his family.
“I have therefore decided it is right for me to step away from politics so that I can devote my time and attention to my family,” he said.
Zaqy Mohamad assumes acting role
Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment, and Defence, Zaqy Mohamad will take over as Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs.
In a statement issued on July 20, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said most of Faishal’s interactions with the woman took place through online messages. They also met on the sidelines of public events.
