Former Selangor menteri besar Khir Toyo has formally joined Bersatu, according to a senior party figure.
Rahim Thamby Chik, the former Melaka chief minister who defected from Umno to Bersatu in 2018, disclosed the development in a Facebook post following a recent luncheon in Bangsar attended by Khir, members of the media, and several political personalities.
“He has committed to contributing his ideas and expertise in formulating the party’s election strategies,” said Rahim, who currently serves as Bersatu’s Melaka chief.
It remains unclear when Khir officially became a member of Bersatu, his reasons for switching parties, or whether he has resigned from Umno.
A three-term Sungai Panjang assemblyman, Khir was convicted of abuse of power in 2015 and sentenced to one year in prison, serving six months before being released on parole.
He sought a political comeback during the 15th general election in 2022, announcing plans to contest the Sungai Besar parliamentary seat. However, Barisan Nasional fielded Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Yunos instead, who later lost to the Perikatan Nasional candidate.
