A former high school teacher in Washington state engaged in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student after exchanging explicit messages and media over several months.
McKenna Kindred, then 23, taught at Central Valley High School in Spokane. The inappropriate contact started in June 2022 when the student discovered her Instagram account.
From there, the pair began sending sexually explicit text messages, photos, and videos to each other.
One message from the student read, “Mom glad I can satisfy you,” to which Kindred responded positively.
In follow-up exchanges, she admitted to using a sex toy while thinking about him, and the conversation touched on recording such acts in the future.
Sexual encounter at marital home
In November 2022, while her husband Kyle Kindred was away on a hunting trip, McKenna invited the student to their home.
The teenager arrived between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. They began kissing while watching a movie on the couch.
The encounter escalated, and they had sex for about 10 minutes in the living room before moving to the bedroom, where they continued until around 10:00 p.m.
After finishing, they returned to the living room to spend time together, then showered. The student left the house around 11:30 p.m.
The entire episode lasted approximately three-and-a-half hours.
Rumours lead to exposure and charges
As rumours spread at school, the student’s friends shared screenshots of the explicit messages with school officials in December 2022.
The student’s mother, Ashley Beckley, later provided investigators with additional evidence, including photos Kindred had sent of her breasts and an explicit video the student had received.
Beckley also confirmed knowledge of the sex toy-related texts.
Kindred was arrested and in March 2024 confessed to first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor.
Outcome and aftermath
She avoided prison but was sentenced to two years of probation, ordered to pay $700 in fines, and required to register as a sex offender for 10 years.
Following her guilty plea, during which she appeared emotional in court, Kindred voluntarily surrendered her teaching licence amid an investigation by the Idaho Standards Commission.
Three months after the sentencing, she and her husband relocated to Kuna, Idaho.
It remains unclear whether she has sought or obtained employment since then.
