The Sarawak government will dissolve the legislative assembly ahead of schedule to allow the 13th state election to take place this year, Gabungan Parti Sarawak has announced.
GPS secretary-general Alexander Nanta Linggi said the election will “definitely” be held in 2025.
He added that the precise date for dissolution rests with Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg.
Nanta, who also serves as secretary-general of GPS component Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, voiced strong confidence that the coalition would retain its majority in the state assembly.
Strong majority from last polls
In the December 2021 state election, GPS secured 76 out of 82 seats contested.
Parti Sarawak Bersatu, led by Wong Soon Koh, won four seats, while DAP took two.
PSB was later dissolved, and Wong Soon Koh together with other members joined the Progressive Democratic Party, a GPS component party.
This move increased GPS’s total seats to 80.
The next state election must be called by April 2027 at the latest.
Plans for expanded assembly
The legislative assembly has previously approved an increase in the number of state seats from 82 to 99.
However, this expansion still requires endorsement from the Dewan Rakyat.
