Parti Wawasan Negara president Hamzah Zainudin has criticised Muhyiddin Yassin for claiming that Perikatan Nasional (PN) has become ‘toxic’ under PAS’s leadership, saying such remarks overlook the Islamic party’s contribution to the coalition.
Hamzah said Muhyiddin should acknowledge the role played by PAS in his political journey, particularly in helping him become prime minister in 2020.
‘How can he say PN has become toxic? Without PAS, Muhyiddin would not have become prime minister. Without Umno, he would not have become prime minister.
‘Let’s not call people toxic. Remember how other parties helped you become prime minister,’ he said after meeting the Sikamat and Ampangan candidates in the Negeri Sembilan state election.
Coalition built through collective efforts
Hamzah said Muhyiddin should remember that PN does not belong solely to Bersatu, stressing that every component party has contributed to strengthening the coalition, including at the state level.
He said it was unfair to make such accusations without recognising the contributions made by PAS throughout the coalition’s political development.
Political ties continue to shift
Last Friday, Muhyiddin accused PAS of steering PN away from its original struggle and of slandering Bersatu’s leadership.
PAS ended its political cooperation with Bersatu last month, although both parties remain members of PN.
The party also declined to assist Bersatu’s campaign in the Johor state election and recently led PN in reaching an electoral pact with Barisan Nasional for the Negeri Sembilan election on Aug 1.
For the state election, BN is contesting 25 of the 36 seats, while PN is contesting the remaining 11 seats. Bersatu, meanwhile, is fielding candidates in 24 constituencies under its own logo.
