Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said he is prepared to resign from the Cabinet if directed to do so by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The Barisan Nasional deputy chairman, who is contesting the Rantau seat in the Negeri Sembilan state election, also stressed that he has no intention of launching personal attacks against leaders from the unity government during the election campaign.
Leaves decision to the prime minister
Mohamad said the decision on his Cabinet position rests entirely with the prime minister, who has the authority to appoint ministers and deputy ministers.
‘If the prime minister orders me to resign, I am willing to do so. It is up to the prime minister because he is responsible for appointing Cabinet ministers and their deputies,’ he said in Mambau, Seremban.
He added that Barisan Nasional’s focus is to ensure its campaign message reaches voters rather than targeting political opponents personally.
Responds to PM’s warning
Earlier, Anwar warned ministers, deputy ministers and officeholders in government agencies against attacking one another while campaigning in the state elections.
The prime minister, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman, said those who use the state election campaign as a platform to attack others should step down from their positions.
Separately, PH Youth called on all BN ministers and deputy ministers to resign from the Cabinet following the coalition’s cooperation with Perikatan Nasional in the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections.
Mohamad said he was not offended by Anwar’s remarks, describing such reminders as a normal part of election campaigning.
‘Campaigning during election season does not mean we have to become personal enemies. I ask the public for their understanding and support for BN,’ he said.
