In accordance with Article 131A of the Federal Constitution and Sections 9(1)(b) and 9(3) of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964 (Act 91), Hasnah Mohammed Hashim, Chief Judge of Malaya, will exercise the powers and discharge the responsibilities of the Chief Justice of Malaysia following the retirement of Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, the nation’s first female Chief Justice.
The Office of the Chief Registrar of the Federal Court confirmed today that this interim appointment encompasses all constitutional functions of the Chief Justice until the position is formally filled.
“The Malaysian judiciary remains resolute in upholding its mandate as the guardian of justice and will continue to serve the nation with the highest level of professionalism and dedication,” the statement affirmed.
Hasnah Mohammed Hashim was appointed as Chief Judge of Malaya on 12 November 2024, holding one of the most senior positions within the Malaysian judicial hierarchy.
Her predecessor, Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, served as Chief Justice for six years before retiring on Wednesday. She made history upon her appointment on 2 May 2019 as the first woman to hold the office in the nation’s history.
The Malaysian Bar has expressed reservations regarding the vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice. Its President, Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab, stated that the absence of a clear and timely succession mechanism raises institutional concerns.
“A prolonged vacancy in such a critical position reflects systemic shortcomings and risks eroding public trust in the judiciary,” he emphasized.
The judiciary reassures the public that all constitutional and statutory provisions remain in full effect during this transitional period.
