A student who was seriously injured in the explosion incident at the HELP University cafeteria in Bukit Damansara remains unconscious, while two other key victims continue receiving treatment in hospital.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said three victims are still warded: a 54-year-old contractor supervisor, a 19-year-old student, and a 22-year-old Indonesian worker.
He said the student, understood to be a law undergraduate, suffered serious injuries and remains under treatment. The contractor supervisor sustained burn injuries, while the foreign worker is in stable condition and continues to be monitored.
“Six other victims who previously received treatment have been discharged,” he said in a statement.
HELP University’s management conveyed condolences and expressed concern for all those affected. The university’s chancellor Paul Chan previously said the university regretted the incident and assured that victims’ welfare would remain a priority.
He also conveyed condolences to the family of the worker who died while carrying out maintenance work on an air-conditioning unit, and wished the injured student a speedy recovery.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, is believed to have been triggered by a failure involving an air-conditioning compressor system, resulting in the death of an external contractor and injuries to nine others, including four students.
Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department said the explosion occurred at the air-conditioning compressor room while maintenance work was in progress, damaging about one-third of the area.
Meanwhile, the body of a Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) student who was killed in the incident was claimed by his family on Tuesday at the Forensic Department of Hospital Kuala Lumpur.
Utar Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering dean Chang Yoong Choon, who represented the family, said they appreciated the media coverage of the incident.
The victim was identified as Soo Yu Juan, 24, a third-year mechanical engineering student who was scheduled to complete his industrial training this week.
