An Iranian ballistic missile strike on a Kuwaiti air base injured several Americans and caused significant damage to US military assets, even as Washington considers extending a fragile ceasefire.
According to a person with direct knowledge of the incident, a Fateh-110 missile launched by Iran was intercepted by Kuwaiti air defence systems on May 30. However, debris from the missile reportedly fell onto Ali Al Salem Air Base.
The source, who requested anonymity because details of the incident are not public, said the falling debris caused injuries and damaged military equipment at the base.
Several Americans suffer minor injuries
The source said about five people sustained minor injuries in the incident.
Those affected included both military personnel and contractors stationed at the base.
No fatalities were reported.
MQ-9 Reaper drones damaged
The strike also caused serious damage to two MQ-9 Reaper strike drones.
According to the source, one of the drones was destroyed, while another suffered extensive damage.
Each MQ-9 Reaper drone is estimated to cost about US$30 million.
US Central Command did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the incident.
Ceasefire discussions continue
The attack occurred as the United States considers an agreement to extend a fragile ceasefire that has been in place since April.
Although the ceasefire remains in effect, both sides have continued to carry out attacks during the period.
On May 29, US President Donald Trump said in a social media post that he was prepared to make a “final determination” regarding a preliminary agreement linked to the ceasefire.
