The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has impounded about 270 luxury vehicles owned by celebrities, businessmen and social-media “influencers” after finding unpaid or expired road tax or insurance, following a two-week nationwide operation in July.
JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said the haul included a Rolls-Royce for which the road tax alone amounted to RM29,000 a year. He added that a Lamborghini Huracán was also among the vehicles seized; its annual road tax would be about RM12,000, Harian Metro reported.
Aedy said compound notices will be issued to the vehicle owners, who must settle the fines and purchase the required road tax and insurance before their vehicles can be released.
“The owners include celebrities, influencers and prominent businessmen,” he said, noting that some vehicles had valid insurance but lacked current road tax. “As long as the compound, road tax or insurance remain unsettled, their vehicles will remain with us.”
He also revealed that certain vehicles had not held valid road tax for as long as three years. The most common explanation offered by owners, he said, was forgetfulness in renewing road tax or insurance.
Aedy said JPJ will continue similar enforcement operations throughout the year.
