His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has issued a stern warning against the procurement of defence assets that are overpriced, irrelevant, or fail to meet the operational needs of the Special Forces Regiment (GGK).
Speaking in conjunction with GGK’s 60th anniversary, His Majesty, who also serves as the unit’s Colonel Commandant, said:
“Do not waste time buying rubbish that is absurd and unsuitable for the military. If you don’t know the price, ask me first.”
Sultan Ibrahim recalled a past incident, highlighting that a Rigid Riding Craft (RRC) had been purchased for RM5 million when better alternatives could be found for less than RM2 million.
“Recently, I heard of another proposal to buy a similar boat, just slightly bigger, at nearly RM10 million. This makes no sense and must be scrutinised,” he stressed.
Beyond cost, His Majesty emphasised quality and functionality in all defence acquisitions. He also expressed dissatisfaction over delays in defence infrastructure projects, pointing out that a combat diving pool scheduled for completion in 2022 remains non-operational.
His remarks reaffirmed a strong commitment to strengthening the operational readiness of the elite GGK, while calling for transparency, accountability, and prudent judgement in defence spending.
