Former Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamad Khir Toyo has confirmed his decision to join Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), acknowledging that the move will likely invite criticism and allegations from various quarters.
In a Facebook statement on Wednesday, Khir said he has grown accustomed to negative perceptions and has no intention of appeasing those who have harboured animosity toward him from the outset.
“I am aware that much slander will arise once news spreads that I have chosen to join Bersatu.
For those displeased with me, countless accusations and condemnations will inevitably circulate across all media platforms,” he remarked.
Khir described it as unwise to live under the weight of others’ negative opinions, particularly when such sentiments only gratify political adversaries.
“They will rejoice when we fail in life,” he added.
The former Sungai Panjang assemblyman explained that his decision stemmed from his belief in Bersatu’s sincerity and commitment to championing the interests of the Malay community and the nation’s future.
He noted that Bersatu now holds more parliamentary seats than Umno, positioning it with greater potential to form governments at both the state and federal levels.
“Victory or defeat lies in God’s hands, but our duty is to make the effort and demonstrate our aspirations with resolve,” Khir said.
Commenting on Umno’s current role, Khir expressed scepticism that the party could regain dominance, particularly when contesting fewer seats than coalition partners such as Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).
“Umno has effectively become a ‘supplementary’ party to Pakatan Harapan. I do not wish to struggle within a party that merely complements another,” he stated.
Reflecting on his service in Umno, Khir conveyed his gratitude to the party and to former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who had once entrusted him to lead Selangor.
Khir also stressed that he no longer harbours lofty political ambitions, instead choosing to dedicate his remaining energy to ensuring the country is led by just and capable Malay leaders.
“I am a simple man with no grand ambitions. Allow me to spend what remains of my strength to ensure this nation’s leadership remains in the hands of Malay leaders who can deliver justice to all, as Umno once did,” he said.
