Kepong MP Donates RM200,000 to Utar Foundation
Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng has donated RM200,000 to the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) Education Foundation, honouring his promise to redistribute part of the RM2.2 million raised through public donations for his legal battle.
The funds were originally collected to support Lim’s court case, but he pledged to channel them to worthy causes after his appeal failed.
“Utar assists many underprivileged Chinese students who miss out on public universities and cannot afford private institutions. I hope this contribution helps them pursue their education,” Lim said during a press conference at The Ming Room Restaurant in Bangsar Shopping Centre today.
The cheque handover occurred at a private luncheon, witnessed by DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook.
Loke praised Lim for his transparency and commitment in managing the donations.
“He has shown he is a man of his word. The support from over 16,000 donors, who contributed RM2.2 million, reflects the strong public trust in him,” Loke added.
In 2023, the High Court ordered Lim to pay RM2 million in damages to MonSpace (M) Sdn Bhd CEO Jessy Lai over defamation claims linked to his accusations that the company operated illegally and defrauded Chinese investors.
The Court of Appeal later slashed the award to RM75,000, deeming the initial amount excessive while upholding the defamation finding.
Utar council member and former minister Chor Chee Heung received the cheque on behalf of the foundation.
He said the money would aid students and support operations at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Hospital in Kampar.
