DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook has resigned as chairman of the party’s Negeri Sembilan chapter following the party’s performance in the recent state election.
Despite his decision, the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) unanimously expressed its support for Loke to continue serving as DAP secretary-general.
Speaking at a press conference after the CEC meeting at the party headquarters, Loke said he was stepping down to take responsibility for DAP losing two state seats, including Chennah, which he had represented for the past three terms.
Takes responsibility for election outcome
Loke said he was proud to have led Negeri Sembilan DAP since 2002, overseeing the party’s growth from holding two state seats in 2004 to winning 11 seats in the 2023 state election.
‘It is time to pass the baton,’ he said.
He stressed that the decision to resign was made voluntarily and was not the result of pressure from any party.
According to Loke, the Negeri Sembilan DAP leadership will meet soon to appoint a new state chairman.
Remains DAP secretary-general
Before the state election, Loke had indicated that he would consider stepping down as Negeri Sembilan DAP chairman if he lost his seat.
The transport minister was defeated in Chennah by MCA candidate Siow Kong Choon with a majority of 688 votes, ending his bid for a fourth consecutive term as the constituency’s assemblyman.
Loke previously served as the Lobak assemblyman from 2004 to 2013 before representing Chennah from 2013.
He remains the Member of Parliament for Seremban.
