The Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta has advised Malaysians in the Indonesian capital to avoid demonstration hotspots in Central Jakarta today and closely monitor updates issued by local authorities.
In an advisory released today, the embassy said it was monitoring reports of demonstrations, particularly around Bundaran HI and the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, also known as Patung Kuda, where traffic disruptions are expected throughout the day.
Embassy issues safety advisory
According to the embassy, the protests are likely to affect traffic in several parts of Central Jakarta, especially along Jalan MH Thamrin, Jalan Jenderal Sudirman and Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat.
The embassy urged Malaysians to stay away from demonstration areas and refrain from taking part in any activities that could violate local laws and regulations.
It also advised those requiring consular assistance to contact its hotline at +62 813-8081-3036.
Student protests expected to affect city centre
Local media reported that the demonstrations were organised by student groups to protest against rising living costs, fuel prices and government policies.
The planned gatherings are expected to draw participants to several prominent locations in the city, contributing to congestion and traffic diversions.
Security tightened across protest locations
Meanwhile, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police deployed 6,088 police and military personnel to secure multiple protest sites, including the House of Representatives complex, Bundaran HI, Patung Kuda and Cikini Raya.
Police spokesperson Budi Hermanto said the deployment was intended to ensure that the demonstrations proceed in a safe and orderly manner while protecting public activities and maintaining security.
