The press secretary to the Negeri Sembilan menteri besar has apologised to the Undang Yang Empat following his use of a title associated with the undang institution during the launch of Pakatan Harapan’s state election machinery on Friday.
Ahmad Shahir Shah said that, as a native of Negeri Sembilan who deeply values the state’s customs, culture and undang institution, he regarded the use of the title ‘Dato’ Undang’ as a serious matter because it touches on the sensitivities of the adat perpatih institution, which should be respected by all regardless of political affiliation.
Apology issued over remarks made in jest
In a statement, Ahmad Shahir said he wished to apologise to the Undang Yang Empat for remarks he made jokingly with DAP secretary-general and Seremban MP Anthony Loke, during which he referred to a title used for Loke on social media, namely ‘Tok Undang’.
He acknowledged that the incident reflected a lapse in judgment and admitted his mistake, expressing hope that the apology would help clear up any misunderstanding arising from the remarks.
Reaffirms respect for undang institution
Ahmad Shahir also reaffirmed that Pakatan Harapan remains committed to respecting and upholding the dignity of the undang institution.
He said the institution is a valuable heritage that forms an integral part of Negeri Sembilan’s identity and pride and deserves continued respect and recognition.
