An aide to DAP election director Wong Kah Woh has challenged MCA to state whether it supports Umno’s call for former prime minister Najib Razak to receive a full pardon.
In a Facebook post, Ong Hui Xue said MCA leaders had avoided addressing the issue following the controversy surrounding a banner featuring a ‘Free Najib’ poster displayed alongside a ‘Maju Johor’ billboard.
He questioned whether MCA agreed with Umno’s position that Najib should be released.
DAP aide questions MCA’s position
Ong said none of the MCA leaders involved had directly responded to what he described as the central issue, namely whether the party supported a full pardon for Najib.
He also referred to previous statements by Umno leaders backing Najib, including remarks by the Johor menteri besar that the people ‘missed’ the former prime minister.
Ong further noted that 104 motions submitted by Umno divisions at the party’s 2026 general assembly called for Najib to receive a full pardon.
Calls for MCA to clarify stand
Ong said Umno had made its position clear and urged MCA to tell voters whether it supported the stance taken by its Barisan Nasional ally.
He added that MCA should not avoid answering whether it backed calls for Najib’s release.
Najib serving prison sentence
Najib, 72, is currently serving a six-year prison sentence after being convicted in the SRC International case. His sentence is scheduled to end on Aug 23, 2028.
He has also been convicted by the High Court on charges of abuse of power and money laundering linked to 1MDB and was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment, to commence after completing his current jail term.
Najib has appealed against that conviction.
