The Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) has urged the government to establish a mechanism enabling citizens who do not require the recently announced RM100 one-off cash aid to voluntarily return the funds, allowing them to be redirected towards critical healthcare and education needs.
In a Facebook post, MCA president Wee Ka Siong suggested that the returned funds could be channelled to expedite elective treatments for approximately 15,000 patients in government hospitals, some of whom currently face waiting periods of up to 21 months.
Wee further proposed that part of the funds be used to award scholarships to top-performing students — including those who achieved straight A’s in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, as well as Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) and matriculation graduates with excellent cumulative grade point averages (CGPAs).
“Rather than utilising public funds in a way that benefits individuals who may not genuinely need them, wouldn’t it be more meaningful to support those who do — while simultaneously strengthening our healthcare and education systems?” Wee wrote.
“This would be a win-win solution: the people have the freedom to choose, and the government can redirect resources to areas of greater need.”
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the RM100 cash assistance for all Malaysians aged 18 and above under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) initiative. The aid, disbursed via MyKad, is introduced in conjunction with National Day celebrations.
In a special televised announcement, Anwar stated that the RM2 billion initiative, expected to benefit 22 million Malaysians, will allow recipients to use the funds between August 31 and December 31 to purchase essential goods at more than 4,100 outlets nationwide, including major retailers such as Mydin, Lotus’s, Econsave, and 99 Speedmart.
Wee added that he believed Anwar, his cabinet ministers, and other elected representatives would be willing to forgo their RM100 allocation.
“I will be the first to contribute mine,” Wee declared.
