The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a group of individuals, believed to be influencers, giving leftover food to a homeless man.
In an official statement, MCMC said the video, widely circulated on social media, raised public concern and was deemed exploitative and unethical.
“MCMC takes a serious view of any act that exploits vulnerable groups for cheap entertainment, views, or to provoke public outrage,” the statement read.
It stressed that degrading or humiliating others in online content contributes to the normalization of inhumane behavior, which contradicts societal values.
The commission confirmed that the probe is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Offenders found guilty may face a fine of up to RM500,000, up to two years’ imprisonment, or both.
The public is reminded not to upload or spread provocative, offensive, or fake content, as legal action may follow.
“MCMC remains committed to ensuring cyberspace is not misused, while upholding law and public harmony,” it added.
