A viral video showing a group of instagram users handing a meal of leftover chicken bones to a homeless person before giving him a proper meal has sparked widespread outrage in Malaysia.
The video, perceived by many as insensitive and humiliating, prompted Semambu State Assemblyman Chan Chun Kuang to lodge an official complaint with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). He urged immediate action to investigate and remove the video.
“This is not only unethical but deeply disrespectful,” Chan said in a statement on Monday. “Exploiting the suffering of the marginalized as entertainment under the guise of charity is unacceptable.”
Chan emphasized that such incidents do not occur in a vacuum. “They reflect a disturbing trend where unethical content creators chase viral fame, while audiences reward them with views,” he said.
“Enforcement alone is not enough, we must cultivate ethical content creation and media literacy across society.”
He urged the government to strengthen digital literacy education and promote awareness about online ethics.
“Respecting human dignity is a shared responsibility. We must not normalize humiliation,” he concluded.
Yesterday, the instagram user apologised for a publicity stunt in which he and two others purportedly gave a homeless man a packet of rice with chicken bones.
The apparent social media influencer said the homeless man had agreed to help them with the video and that he already knew he would be given rice with chicken bones purely for the video.
In a video, Instagram user @aluk_77 maintained that they did not actually give the man just chicken bones but had bought him a full meal with two pieces of fried chicken.
