Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation as Perikatan Nasional chairman has not been officially accepted yet, says the coalition’s election director Sanusi Nor.
Constitutional Process Required
Sanusi said the Perikatan Nasional constitution requires any resignation to be discussed and formally accepted at a meeting of the coalition’s leadership, according to Sinar Harian.
“Even if the resignation has been announced and the letter submitted, it must still go through deliberation in a proper meeting,” the Kedah menteri besar was quoted as saying.
He made the remarks after attending the state civil servants’ assembly at Wisma Darul Aman today.
“So, officially, the resignation is not valid until then,” he added.
Sanusi said Perikatan Nasional is expected to convene a meeting within a week to settle the matter.
Background to the Resignation
Muhyiddin stepped down as PN chairman effective January 1, amid political turmoil in Perlis that led to a change of menteri besar between PAS and Bersatu.
Several other PN leaders followed suit by resigning from their state-level positions.
These included Azmin Ali as Selangor PN chairman, Sahruddin Jamal as Johor PN chairman and Ahmad Faizal Azumu as Perak PN chairman.
Potential Leadership Changes
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang later signalled that his party was prepared to lead the coalition.
He mentioned that several names, including his own, were being considered to succeed Muhyiddin.
Speculation grew after Muhyiddin held a casual meeting yesterday with PAS vice-president and Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokthar.
This has sparked rumours that Samsuri could be the next PN chairman.
