Bersatu hopes voter turnout in the Johor state election will exceed 70% despite heavy rain affecting several districts on polling day.
Party president Muhyiddin Yassin said the wet weather could have a slight impact on turnout but remained optimistic that voters would continue to fulfil their civic responsibility.
Speaking to reporters after casting his ballot at SMK Sri Muar, Muhyiddin said traffic congestion indicated that many voters had returned to Johor to vote.
“I am not sure if the rain will continue until late afternoon, and this may have a small impact on the turnout percentage.
“But looking at the spirit of the people, traffic is congested. Many have returned from Kuala Lumpur to vote. So in my view, even though it is raining, I hope the turnout will be quite high, not less than 70%,” he said.
Calls for voters to brave the weather
Muhyiddin arrived at the polling centre at about 10am with his wife, Noorainee Abdul Rahman, before casting his vote.
He also encouraged eligible voters who had yet to vote not to let the weather discourage them from heading to polling stations.
“Even though it is raining, the important thing is that we must vote. I appeal to everyone who has not come out this morning to quickly go out to vote and support their chosen candidates,” he said.
Voters urged to fulfil their responsibility
Muhyiddin said the most important priority was for voters to exercise their democratic right and complete the electoral process.
“What is important is that voters can fulfil their respective responsibilities, and after this process is completed, Johor will have a new state government,” he said.
