Former prime minister Najib Razak has yet to pay the RM50 million fine imposed on him, according to the latest information received by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).
Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar said no specific deadline had been set for Najib to settle the fine.
“So far, the information we have received indicates that Najib has yet to fulfil the requirement, as of now,” he told reporters after attending an event today.
Asked whether Najib would still have to serve his prison sentence if the fine remained unpaid, Dusuki confirmed that he would.
RM50 million fine tied to conditional pardon
On Sept 18, the media reported that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, had granted Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
The arrangement was conditional upon Najib paying the RM50 million fine.
The Prime Minister’s Department’s Legal Affairs Division said the decision was made at the 64th Meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, held at Istana Negara.
In July 2020, the Kuala Lumpur High Court sentenced Najib to 12 years in prison and fined him RM210 million after finding him guilty of misappropriating RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd.
The conviction and sentence were subsequently upheld by the Court of Appeal in December 2021 and the Federal Court in August 2022.
However, at its 61st meeting on Jan 29, 2024, the Pardons Board decided to reduce Najib’s prison sentence from 12 years to six years and his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.
Najib faces additional 1MDB and SRC cases
On Dec 26 last year, the High Court sentenced Najib to 15 years in prison and fined him RM11.4 billion after finding him guilty of four charges of abuse of power and 21 charges of money laundering involving RM2.3 billion in 1MDB funds.
He filed an appeal on Dec 29, 2025.
In a separate civil case, the High Court on March 31 ordered Najib to repay US$1.3 billion to SRC International after finding that he had breached his fiduciary duties, abused his position and misappropriated company funds for personal gain.
However, enforcement of the repayment order was stayed pending the outcome of his appeal.
Najib is also facing two other lawsuits filed in 2021, one by SRC International and another by Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd.
In addition, 1MDB and four of its subsidiaries have filed a US$5.64 billion civil suit against him.
All the cases remain before the courts.
