The decision by Umno to maintain its support for the unity government in Negeri Sembilan does not affect the opposition’s standing in the state, according to a PAS leader.
Negeri Sembilan Perikatan Nasional (PN) had previously expressed readiness to partner with Umno to establish a new state administration.
This followed a declaration by Umno assemblymen that they no longer had confidence in the leadership of Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun.
Opposition remains unaffected by federal intervention
Negeri Sembilan PAS chief Fairuz Isa noted that Umno’s central leadership has since altered its position. He clarified that this development is not a concern for the opposition coalition and does not result in any losses for their side.
Fairuz also conveyed his respect for his Umno counterpart, Jalaluddin Alias, regarding his consistent views on Aminuddin.
However, he acknowledged that Jalaluddin was ultimately required to follow the official party line set at the federal level.
Focus on political stability and state governance
The shift in the situation was solidified when Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki announced that the party would remain part of the unity government.
He cited the need to ensure political stability and protect the welfare of the people in Negeri Sembilan as the primary reasons for the decision.
This follows an earlier move on Monday where all 14 Barisan Nasional (BN)-Umno assemblymen withdrew their support for Aminuddin. That decision was reportedly connected to an ongoing crisis involving four local chieftains.
Previous offer for cooperation
Before the federal intervention, Negeri Sembilan PN had indicated that its five assemblymen were prepared to collaborate with the BN representatives. The goal of the proposed cooperation was to ensure continuity and stability within the state government.
Had the two groups united, their combined 19 seats would have granted BN a simple majority to form a new administration without the current coalition partners.
