Pas Central Working Committee (AJK) member Dr. Mohd Mazri Yahya has urged the government to give attention and take immediate action regarding the spread of ‘deviant’ culture and lifestyles (LGBT) promoted through social media.
Dr. Mohd Mazri, who is also a medical officer, said many parents have raised concerns about the easy accessibility of various LGBT groups or channels, including those claiming to be support groups, on social media.
He added that many such spaces exist without age filtering, with some uploading pornographic content, personal disclosures, and invitations for secret meetings.
LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and along with heterosexual they are terms used to describe people’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
Dr. Mohd Mazri gave examples of groups on platforms like Telegram under names such as “Rainbow KL”, “Boyz MY”, or “Girls4Girls JB”, which are shared via Twitter and Reddit, and which many school students are secretly joining.
“The problem is, all this is not just a ‘support community’,” Dr. Mohd Mazri said via his Facebook page today.
“They use soft terms like ‘safe space’, but ultimately many underage students get involved in risky activities — emotionally, morally, and sexually.”
According to Dr. Mohd Mazri, this phenomenon is no longer a personal issue but a national social problem, urging the government to stop pretending ‘not to see’ the symptoms.
As a control measure, he suggested that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Ministry of Education (MoE), in particular, should establish a student digital content monitoring unit.
He explained that this unit could act by monitoring and ‘tagging’ social media accounts that promote LGBTQ+ to minors.
In addition, he added, the government should also create a blacklist of accounts or groups on local social media platforms like Telegram or Reddit that are proven to encourage ‘deviant’ lifestyles, along with an immediate content takedown notice.
At the same time, he said, the government also needs to enforce the Online Safety Act 2025 to protect students from harmful content and exploitation.
