Perikatan Nasional (PN) chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan said the coalition is prepared to require all members of its administration to declare their assets if it returns to government, framing the move as a transparency measure.
He was responding to Bersih’s observation that opposition MPs have yet to declare their assets.
He added that ordinary MPs may engage in business and already declare annual income to the Inland Revenue Board.
He said, “It is appropriate for MPs holding administrative posts, such as ministers or deputy ministers, to declare assets as they are prohibited from doing business or holding any ‘office of profit’.”
“Of course, we will impose asset declarations on administration members at all levels when we return as the government,” he told the New Straits Times.
Earlier, Bersih chairman Faisal Abdul Aziz said opposition MPs have yet to declare assets ahead of elections, noting that those who did so previously were mainly from PKR before the 15th General Election in 2022, including Anwar Ibrahim and Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, while Rafizi Ramli declared RM18.8 million.
Last week, Bersih urged candidates contesting in next month’s Sabah Election to declare assets to improve transparency over campaign funds and resources.
