Bersatu Deputy President and Perikatan Nasional (PN) Secretary-General Hamzah Zainudin announced today that the coalition has chosen its candidate for Sabah’s chief minister should it win the upcoming state election. However, he declined to disclose the candidate’s identity, emphasizing that the individual is a Sabahan.
“Why should I reveal it now? This is the kind of question reporters always ask, but we won’t answer until the final moment,” Hamzah said during a press conference following the opening of the Bersatu Youth and Women’s Wings general assemblies in Shah Alam on September 6, 2025.
He underscored PN’s commitment to fielding local candidates, stating, “This is about Sabah. Naturally, the chief minister candidate will be a Sabahan, and all our contestants will hail from Sabah. Our role is to provide unwavering support to ensure our colleagues in Sabah secure victory.”
The current term of the Sabah state assembly is set to expire on November 11, 2025, unless dissolved earlier, with elections required within 60 days of dissolution. Chief Minister Hajiji Noor recently hinted at a possible dissolution in the coming weeks but did not specify a date. He also suggested that the upcoming election might be his last.
Meanwhile, Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM), an ally of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, has named its deputy president, Wetrom Bahanda, as its chief minister candidate should it form the next state government.
