Perlis mufti Asri Zainul Abidin has stressed that any allegation linking the state’s political crisis to projects approved in breach of rules must be supported by evidence. He warned that unsubstantiated claims could create negative perceptions of certain institutions.
Asri said he had personally raised the matter with the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail.
Raja Urges Proof from Accusers
The Perlis ruler urged those making such allegations to come forward with details of the projects involved. Asri noted that Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin did not refer to anyone specifically.
He emphasised that claims of this nature could lead to harmful perceptions.
Concerns Over Negative Perceptions
Asri highlighted the risk of suggestions that the menteri besar resigned due to pressure over irregular approvals. He questioned who could exert such influence, warning of very negative implications.
“I am not defending anyone, but accusations must be backed by evidence,” he added.
Religious Sensitivity in Allegations
Asri expressed deep concern over the issue. He said such claims should not be made in the name of religion.
The mufti, also known as Maza, shared his views on the podcast “Realiti Politik: Antara Agama dan Kuasa” by PromediaTajdid.
Calls for MACC Probe
Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi yesterday called on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate claims of corruption behind the Perlis turmoil. PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had linked the crisis to projects not following regulations.
Hadi suggested corruption and other issues lay behind these projects.
Hadi’s Remarks on Pressure
The Marang MP claimed former menteri besar Shukri refused to yield to pressure on certain projects. His comments came amid rising tensions in Perikatan Nasional.
Shukri resigned on Thursday, citing health reasons, after losing coalition support.
