Umno Youth will hold a special convention to decide whether the party should continue cooperating with Pakatan Harapan or end the alliance. The move follows DAP Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin’s refusal to apologise for a post perceived as celebrating the High Court’s rejection of Najib Razak’s house arrest bid.
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said the event seeks grassroots input from members loyal to the party’s struggle.
Call for Strong Attendance
Akmal urged those brave enough to voice their opinions, especially Malays who value Umno’s struggle, to attend in large numbers. He wants views expressed at the convention to reach the party’s Supreme Council and president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The convention is scheduled for January 3 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, starting at 3pm.
Triggered by Selangor Umno Demand
The convention stems from Selangor Umno’s 24-hour ultimatum for Yeo to apologise, which went unmet. Yesterday, Puchong Umno declared it would sever all ties with its Pakatan Harapan counterpart over the issue.
Yeo’s Controversial Post
On December 22, Yeo posted on Facebook “another reason to celebrate this year end” after the Kuala Lumpur High Court dismissed Najib’s application. Najib sought to serve the remainder of his SRC International prison sentence under house arrest.
The remark angered Umno leaders.
Calls for Cooperation Review
Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki suggested it may be time to reassess ties with those who do not appreciate the party’s contributions. The controversy has heightened tensions within the unity government coalition.
