Perikatan Nasional (PN) has strongly condemned the recent attack on the 12-year-old son of former economy minister Rafizi Ramli, calling the assault a grave threat to Malaysia’s democratic principles.
Opposition chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan described the incident as “completely unacceptable.” The attack reportedly took place at a shopping mall in Putrajaya, where an assailant allegedly dragged Rafizi’s son and stabbed him with a syringe.
In a statement, the Kota Bharu MP noted Rafizi’s belief that the attack was a warning intended to silence him on certain issues. “If this is true, it represents a disturbing development of thuggish politics, which poses a serious threat to the country’s democratic landscape,” Takiyuddin said.
He emphasized that differences in political views should never escalate to physical violence, especially when children are involved. Takiyuddin called for the perpetrator to be swiftly brought to justice and face strict legal action, sending “a clear message that any form of violence, especially against children, has no place in Malaysia.”
PN also expressed moral support for Rafizi and his family, and extended prayers for the boy’s full recovery. Takiyuddin urged the public to resist provocation and speculation that could be deliberately created to divide society, reminding everyone that “the country’s peace and stability are our shared responsibility.”
Separately, Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar stated that the incident is believed to have occurred at 2:00 p.m. at the mall’s pick-up and drop-off area. Speaking to Bernama, he confirmed that the boy was with his mother and their driver at the time. Police investigations are ongoing, with a review of CCTV footage from the scene currently underway.
Rafizi, the Pandan MP, said the attack was unprecedented in his political career. The former PKR deputy president believes the assault was carried out by two men on a motorcycle, both dressed in black and wearing helmets, who he claims had been tailing his wife’s car. “I believe this attack was a warning for me not to speak out strongly on certain matters,” he said in a statement. “God willing, while I will be taking follow-up steps to strengthen security measures, I will not bow to any threats and will continue to carry out my duties as usual.”
