Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin announced on Sunday, September 7, 2025, that the coalition remains open to forging partnerships with political parties in Sabah, including Parti Warisan (Warisan), either before or after the upcoming state election.
However, he confirmed that Bersatu and PN have ruled out cooperation with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).
Speaking at a press conference following Bersatu’s annual general assembly, Muhyiddin emphasized the fluid nature of Sabah’s political landscape.
“There are many possibilities in Sabah,” he said.
“Nothing has been finalized yet because I understand the complexities there. Some political partnerships have dissolved, while others persist, reflecting Sabah’s unique dynamics.”
He stressed the need for careful deliberation, noting that each party is evaluating its options. “There are still unresolved matters, so we will wait for the opportune moment,” Muhyiddin added.
Addressing speculation about Sabah Bersatu chief Ronald Kiandee as a potential PN chief minister candidate, Muhyiddin acknowledged the possibility but said no decision has been made.
“It’s possible, but we haven’t discussed it yet,” he said.
“When the time comes, we will announce it. We have several strategies to finalize first, such as cooperation with aligned parties. Announcing things prematurely would not be prudent.”
Muhyiddin’s cautious approach underscores PN’s intent to time its decisions strategically to maximize electoral impact. He noted that premature announcements could undermine the coalition’s position.
The decision to forego collaboration with GRS stems from actions taken by several Sabah MPs and assemblymen who, after the 15th general election, left the coalition to join the unity government, prompting distrust within Bersatu and PN.
As Sabah’s political scene continues to evolve, PN’s openness to new alliances signals a calculated effort to strengthen its position ahead of the state election.
